The eruption of the Bandai volcano in 1888 was trigged by the sudden expansion of pent-up steam beneath the old crater called Numano-taira and was accompanied by terrible explosion with rock avalanche, mud flow and wind blasts. A description of similar events at the old crater was found in the historical document “Togoku Ryokodan” (Tales collected by the traveler in the Eastern Provinces), which was published in 1789, about a century before the 1888 phreatic eruption. By referring to the document published in 1789 and Sekiya and Kikuchi (1890), we inferred that the pattern of both eruptions had almost identical characteristics except rock avalanche, suggesting that terrestrial and aqueous disturbances have occurred simultaneously at Numano-taira and its vicinity. We discussed the reason why Sekiya and Kikuchi (1890) did not include the complete description of the historical eruption in their paper.
