In Japan, interest in management philosophies and how they are spread is greater now than in previous years. There have been many reports on the spread of management philosophies in recent years, even within empirical studies. However, the mechanisms by which such philosophies are spread in business organizations – namely, “What sort of management philosophy should an enterprise adopt as a company, what framework should it employ, what efforts should it make to spread the philosophy and will this lead to results?” – are still not completely understood. This study refers first to contingency theory and SHRM (strategic human resource management theory), and then presents “a macro-level paradigm of research on spreading philosophies,” and organizes the prior research. Then, in order to locate the mechanism(s) for spreading philosophies, a framework was created based on a causal model of “the content of the philosophy-measures to spread the philosophy-spreading the content of the philosophy-results;” following which a one-company, one-response questionnaire was conducted and then, the causal relationships based on a path analysis were considered. As a result, it was clarified that measures for spreading a philosophy are implemented depending on the content of the philosophy, and that the content of the philosophy is embodied by ideas such as “products, services, and business” as well as “management,” and that they are connected to performance. In addition, it was clarified that personnel systems are effective for embodying the philosophy in “management,” regardless of the content of the philosophy.Further, the results showed that measures for spreading a philosophy have a direct impact on performance, without encountering the embodiment of the philosophy.
