Partnerships between Not-for-Profit organizations (NPOs) and companies has increased. This relationships, however, have rarely been considered from a nonprofit perspective. This article aims to clarify the formation process of critical resource dependent relationship from the stand point of NPOs. The reason why NPOs establish NPO-company partnership is they consider the relationship with company as a critical resource dependent relationship. Previous research has suggested characteristics of resources define the resource dependence. However, these studies have not considered that sensemaking influence resource dependence even from the resource dependence perspective. This study explores the process that the relationship is defined through sensemaking. The results of this case study of an NPO suggest that change of frames within an NPO defined the relationship with company as a critical resource dependence for the NPO. Additionally, this study finds 3 types of frames: (1) that have already been manifested within the NPO, (2) that translate meaning that created thorough prior sensemaking, and (3) that is manifested through new sensemaking. Researchers has claimed the characteristics of resources define resource dependent relationships. This study clarifies that NPOs regard relationships with company as important resource dependent relationships when they create meaning through change of frames in sensemaking.
