Abstract
Objective: This article intends to describe the outline of the 22nd IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion (2016 in Curitiba, Brazil) and a trend of Northern Part of the Western Pacific (NPWP) from a perspective of a Japanese participant.
Contents: The theme of the World Conference was “Promoting health and equity”, and 980 titles were collected with more than 2,000 participants from about 70 countries. In the wake of the previous conference in Pattaya, Thailand, the conference highlighted policy making and advocacy for ensuring and promoting equity. Health literacy was proposed as prescription for narrowing the health inequality. Variety of topics about health promotion were discussed for different settings: maternal and child health, schools, workplaces, communities and hospitals. The Curitiba Declaration advocated that “Health promotion is not viable without these four basic principles: equity, human rights, peace and participation.” In a trustee election to be held every three years, Mr. Graham Robertson of the U.K. was elected as the new President of IUHPE and Prof. Masamine Jimba was elected as the new vice president of NPWP, respectively. The new activities will be developed toward the next World Conference in New Zealand in 2019.
Conclusion: Curitiba Declaration emphasized four basic principles, equity, human rights, peace and participation. This message should be shared in Japan and specific actions should be taken in the coming three years to make it more meaningful.
