Abstract
To improve the reliability of a magnetic disk unit, we studied flying characteristics of a magnetic disk slider with dust. The dust adhering to the slider changes the shape of the slider and influences the efficiency of air lubrication that determines the slider flying height. Therefore the flying height characteristics of the slider with dust on its rails was numerically examined. It was learned that the accumulation of triangular dust at the tapered portion of the slider decreases the flying height. Rectangular dust at the center and trailing edge portions have smaller influences on flying height.
