Abstract

In 1991, the disease, which is characterized by small brown lesions surrounded by large and yellow halo on the leaves of rice, occurred in Hokkaido, Japan. From lesions, several bacterial isolates, which produced fruorescent pigment, were obtained. They were pathogenic to rice plants by spray inoculation. The bacteriological characteristics and pathogenicty of these bacterial isolates were identical to those of Pseudomonas syringae pv. oryzae Kuwata 1985, which cause bacterial halo blight of rice. The occurrence of this disease has been recorded only in Aomori Pref., Japan. It was the first record that the disease was found in Hokkaido.
