Abstract
The acid-base balance and the changes of lactate and pyruvate were studied during the prolonged (3 hours) extra-corporeal circulation in dogs and clinical cases. The extra-corporeal circulation was carried out with mild hypothermia and 30% hemodilution.
The conclusion is as follows :
1) In order to maintain the normal peripheral circulation and carbohydrate metabolism during and after the extra-corporeal circulation, it is important to correct metabolic acidosis.
2) Even if 100% oxygen was insufflated into the oxygenator for 3 hours, the metabolic acidosis was not revealed.
3) As the non electrolyte solution for priming and the prolonged perfusion have the tendency to invite metabolic alkalosis within 24 hours, serious consideration should be given to this point in the postoperative care.
