Abstract

Since January 1986, SMANCS/LIPIODOL (SMANCS/LPD) has been used as a new therapy for hepatic malignant tumors (primary & secondary).
SMANCS/LPD is a high-molecular-weight anticancer agent consisting of SMANCS (1mg) dissolved in Lipiodol (1ml). This agent collects only in the tumor cells selectively, and remains active for a long period.
A total of 5ml of SMANCS/LPD was injected into the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery of a 35-year-old male patient with hepatoma on two occasions. Twenty days after the 2nd injection, the hepatoma was resected and examined both radiologically & pathologically. Almost all tumor cells were destroyed except for a small area of viable cancer cells on the tumor capsule.
If repeated, targeting chemotherapy using SMANCS/LPD is highly effective against hepatic malignant tumors.
