The distribution records of fish species in Fukuoka Prefecture have not been compiled for the past 50 years. Based on a survey of a wide range of literatures, specimens held at Kyushu University and the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History and Human History (the collection formerly held at the Kitakyushu Natural History Museum), and recent photographs, 780 species of 214 families were confirmed from Fukuoka Prefecture, including the Genkai-nada, Hibiki-nada, Suo-nada, and Ariake seas. The results of this survey revealed that 113 species have not been recorded and/or collected as museum specimens from this region in the past 50 years or more.
