A spherical wave field is exactly represented with the bandlimited angular spectrum of the plane waves. This representation is reduced to the “circular plane wave” (CPW) expansion. The maximum bandwidth and the minimum fringe spacing of a diffraction pattern are determined by representation of the diffracted wave field with the CPW expansion. Using these results, the spatial frequency distributions of a hologram and the reconstructed image are obtained. The resolution of a holographic image is also analyzed.
