More than 75 years have passed since Japan's defeat in 1945 and the number of people in the generation who experienced or have some memories of life during the war is decreasing. Statistically speaking, it is said that less than 10% of the total population of Japan fit in these categories. As a result, we are moving from an era in which testimonies of the war are passed on by those who experienced the war to an era in which memories of the war and life under the war must be handed down to future generations by a generation that did not experience the war directly themselves. It can be said that we are now in an era of "weathering," due to the disappearance of those who experienced the war.

This paper looks at Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and examines the relationships between survivors of the war and persons who are engaged in peace studies as practitioners and learners as well as the significance of the mutual learning that occurs as these activities progress.

This approach to the study of history in Izumi City has been an attempt to build relationships of trust in which local governments, local citizens, those who come to learn, and researchers can come together to learn from one another, and points to the emergence of new images of history and of local society.
