The Role of "Supporter" in a Learning Community

Abstract

The class of "Social Research (Prof. Senoh, in charge)", in Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC), Keio University, developed a new educational system since 1996, which is research project-based, using digital media environment such as web-site and e-mail. The network environment enables many outside adult professionals such as journalist, business person get involved in students' projects as "supporters", as well as the teacher, student assistants, and "OBs/OGs" of the class . This system is called "learning community", a new attempt to make the "learners/supporters" educational model realized. In order to make students learn in a more effective and efficient way and produce more meaningful and fruitful outputs, the supporters play various roles such as "facilitator", "process consultant", "content consultant" and others. Sometimes they change their roles and interact with other supporters for collaboration. This paper shows some analysis of date based on cases of this six years experiments, and discusses the roles of "supporters" in a "learning community" in university's education.
