Suprasegmental phonemes like rhythm and intonation play an important role when speaking English. Japanese learners of English find it difficult to master them because of the fundamental rhythmic differences existing between Japanese and English. Until recently, materials for English rhythm pattern practice were primarily text−based, analog audio exercises. For this research project, these traditional materials were enhanced with digitalized visual and auditory effects. These enhancements were tested in order to ascertain the most effective ones. The merits of these new computer−based materials were investigated, and the potential of further developments based on this method are discussed.
