The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between programming ability and knowledge structure among junior high school students in elementary programming, using Visual Basic. Educational guidance was given to 110 ninth grade students, and their programming abilities were examined by their achievement levels following completion of an assignment program. Their knowledge structure was then examined by a card sorting test(Shavelson&Stanton, 1975). A pass analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between their programming abilities and knowledge structure, and it was suggested that:1)the control structure and the knowledge structure concerning calculation and expression played important roles in the development of programming ability;2)the knowledge structure for using Visual Basic Control, on the contrary, has no direct influence over programming ability.
