According to our investigation (EGUCHI, YOSHITAKE and KAI) the silkworm can be classified into four types (O, A, B and C) concerning blood esterase. In this paper, the different types of esterase were investigated in 161 silkworm strains. About 70% of the strains investigated were found to be A type, and 20% were O type with no enzyme band having esterase activity.
As to the difference of enzyme types among geographic races, it became clear that in Japanese and European races about 30% are O type, while in Chinese race only 10%; and that on the contrary A type is distributed more frequently in Chinese race.
