Abstract
We planted two species of the Taiwan encouraging mulberries, and two species of the Shimaguwa mulberries of the native varieties in the Sakishima Islands, by using the repeated Latin square method in the newly opened mulberry field of Research Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ryukyu University, present in the Iriomote Island, and carried out comparative cultivation of them, It was found that the Taiwan mulberries gave larger leaf-yields than the Shimaguwa mulberies, and especially the difference between their leaf-yields became bigger as they grew, In additon, judging from the ecological characteristics such as the tree performance, the Taiwan encouraging mulberries are inferred to fit as a cultivated mulberry in the Iriomote Island, On the other hand the Shimaguwa mulberries adapt themselves well to the severe environment of the Sakishima Islands, and are able to grow thick there, They may be good as a residential mulberry, As the cultivated mulberry such as low-cut and medium-cut training, however, the Shimaguwa mulberries seem to be inferior in comparison to the Taiwan encouraging mulberries.
