Novel methyl methacrylate and styrene type macromonomers with fluorine containing poly(ethylene glycol) were prepared by reactions between 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate or p-aminostyrene and poly(ethylene glycol) with a fuoroformyl group at the end. This group was obtained by polymerization of ethylene oxide with hexafluoropropylene oxide. NMR results indicated that the obtained macromonomers had fluorine containing poly(ethylene glycol) with the methyl methacrylate or styrene type double bond at the chain end. Radical polymerizations of methyl methacrylate and styrene type macromonomers gave graft polymers with the poly(methyl methacrylate) or the polystyrene platform having fluorine containing poly(ethylene glycol) side chains, while only the styrene type macromonomer could be polymerized with butyllithium to give the graft polymer having the polystyrene backbone and fluorine containing poly(ethylene glycol) side chains.
