The aminoethylated bacterial cellulose (AEBC) was prepared in a heterogenuos reaction and the tensile strength of their fiber sheets was evaluated. AEBC was obtained by the Hofmann reaction of carbamoylethylated BC (CBBC). CBBC was prepared via cyanoethylation of BC and hydrolysis in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The presence of ammonium ions was confirmed by dyeing with acid orange and by FT-IR spectroscopy. The optimum NaOH concentration for the Hofmann reaction of CBBC was found to be 1 mol/L. The dry and wet tensile strengths of AMBC sheets with a thickness of 20 µm were greater than those of untreated BC sheets. In addition water-resistant and quick-drying properties were excellent.
