Abstract

Although there are differences in the contents of documents that record the origins of Myogi Shrine (妙義神社), Nakanotake Shrine (中之嶽神社), and Sugawara Shrine (菅原神社), which were the religious centers of Mt. Myogi (妙義山), all of them include the legend that this was the place where Sugawara no Michizane (菅原道真), who would later become Tenmatenjin (天満天神),was born into the secular world.
By comparing and examining these various documents, it can be inferred that Kannoji Temple (菅応寺), which controlled Sugawara Shrine, was the original base of Tenjin faith that developed at the foot of Mt. Myogi.
