One main purpose of the maintenance hemodialysis for the patients of chronic renal failure is the removal of fluid from the overhydrated state. Until today, however, fluid volume which is removed by hemodialysis has been estimated retrospectively by the difference of body weight before and after the dialysis. The experiment was made to determine the relation between the volume of removed fluid and the coil pressure or blood flow rate by the coil type artificial kidney. Coil pressure and blood flow rate are changed variously, while osmolality of dialysis fluids, kind of coils, priming volumes, and dialysis times are maintained constant during the experiment. The apparatus used for the experiment was CD-I manufactured by Nikkiso Co., Japan, which is routinely used in our dialysis center. Straight line correlations between the volumes of removed fluid and coil pressures or blood flow rates are obtained. According to the experimental results, the tables were established which indicate the close relations among these three factors. We are now utilizing these tables for the directions of coil pressure and blood flow rate to know how much kilogramms should be reduced in our daily dialysis work.
