Plasma samples from 45 pulmonary disease patients were examined by starch gel electrophoresis for the electrophoretic variation of alpha_1-antitrypsin (α_1-AT) and the mean value of trypsin inhibiting capacity (T.I.C.). The deficient types of α_1-AT, namely ZZ, SZ, SS were not found in this samples, but only two showed ME type. The mean value of T.I.C. (1.257mg/ml. serum) was not significantly different with that of normal population (1.229mg/ml. serum). It was more likely that the allele of Pi^z was extremely rare in Japanese population. No definite association with pulmonary disease and α_1-AT deficient types was found in this study. Furthermore, the distribution of various polymorphic traits (Tf, Hp, PGM, ACP, PGD, EsD) were studied to detect the association with pulmonary diseases. No statistic significances were obtained.
