This Paper follows the development of F. Rosenzweig's thought on translation especially in his essays about Jewish education.
This research clarified what Rosenzweig aimed at, when he planned to found “das freie jüdische Lehrhaus”, and then, elucidated how he really thinks about translation. To characterise how and what Rosenzweig really hopes and thinks on translation, we focused on the preface “Jehuda Halevi”.
It is found that Rosenzweig tried to pass jewish tradition to the next generation with translation. However his theory of translation was also an attempt which Jewish and German could live together. He translated sentences from Hebrew into German literally, not freely, so that German changes into a new language that receives Hebrew spirit.
“Eine Spache”, which is God's word and surpasses human understanding, is a virtual focus in his theory of translation. It is through this virtual focus setting in his theory that makes languages cooperation possible. Moreover on the basis of this theory, he was searching for cooperation and coexistence of German and Jewish.
