Seasonal changes in the species composition and population density of leafminer flies, Liriomyza trifolii, L. sativae and Chromatomyia horticola, were investigated in fields where garden pea (snap pea), Pisum sativum L., and broad bean, Vicia faba L., were cultivated in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture. During the observation period from October 2015 to March 2016, the dominant species differed among host plants and seasons. On snap pea, L. trifolii dominated from October to November, whereas C. horticola dominated after November. On broad bean, L. trifolii occurred consistently and L. sativae was observed occasionally in one of the investigated fields. Chromatomyia horticola could not survive on broad bean in a laboratory test, suggesting that broad bean was not a suitable host plant for this fly.
