Abstract

In recent years, the amount of discarded small electronic devices has been increasing, and many of these devices contain built-in batteries such as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). LIBs contain valuable metals including lithium and cobalt, and therefore their recycling is highly desirable. Although technologies for recovering metals through hydrometallurgical process have been advancing, securing a sufficient processing volume is essential for establishing a viable business model. From another perspective, in order to prevent fires in recycling facilities caused by LIBs, which have become a serious issue in recent years, it is necessary to recover batteries without crushing them. Conventional manual operations have limitations in terms of processing speed and accuracy. Against this background, we are developing technologies for the detection, separation, and sorting of batteries embedded in discarded small electronic devices, aiming to enable their safe and efficient recovery in recycling facilities.
