Abstract
Synchronization of optical pulses with microwave and millimeter-wave signals is an indispensable technology for such applications as optical communication and optical metrology. This paper reviews the principles and recent progress of synchronization techniques for optical pulses emitted by solid-state and semiconductor mode-locked lasers. Various methods have been employed to realize precise synchronization, such as the use of an optoelectronic phase-locked loop, injection-locking, or active or hybrid mode-locking.
