We have measured two-dimensional (2D) rescattering photoelectron momentum spectra of randomly
oriented N2 and O2 molecules generated by near-infrared ultra-short laser pulses and have extracted
corresponding elastic differential cross sections (DCSs) of free electrons scattered by the target ions.
The comparison of the N2 and O2 DCSs indicates that the angle-dependent ionization rate of molecules
strongly affects the extracted DCSs. We have also compared these experimentally extracted DCSs for
O2 with theoretical calculations. The good agreement between the experimentally extracted and
theoretically calculated DCSs indicates the validity of the present procedure for the extraction of the
DCSs from rescattering electron spectra.
