Abstract
Few devices have long-term stability in heavy radiation environments such as nuclear power plants and accelerators. The recent nuclear accident at the Fukushima-1 Nuclear Power Plant demonstrated the importance of the visualization of core parts of nuclear systems, as some areas are restricted because of the presence of heavy radiation. Fused-silica-based optical fi bers are considered among the strongest candidates for visualization in heavy radiation fields. This paper describes the present status of the development of the radiation-resistant optical fi ber and its application in radiation environments.
