Abstract
Holography provides satisfactory three-dimensional (3D) imaging technology because it can accurately reconstruct the wavefronts of light emanating from objects. Displaying 3D images with a wide viewing zone requires a spatial light modulator (SLM) having a fine pixel-pitch and an extremely large number of pixels. We have developed SLMs driven by spin-transfer switching for electronic holography. We called this device a spin-SLM. It is advantageous in terms of its submicron pixel size, high-speed light modulation, and non-volatility. We fabricated a one-dimensional spin-SLM with a 1-μm pixel-pitch based on giant magneto-resistance (GMR) and demonstrated its successful operation. We also succeeded in fabricating a two-dimensional spin-SLM with a 2-μm pixel-pitch based on tunnel magneto-resistance (TMR). In order to investigate feasibility of spin-SLM for a 3D display, a GMR-based hologram with a 1-μm pixel-pitch was fabricated and the characteristics of 3D imaging were evaluated.
