We reviewed the advanced diagnostics of laser wakefield acceleration. Our discussions focus on wakefield measurements and the pulse duration of electrons, which are relevant and important to understand and improve the stability of electron beams. We also introduce our strategy for achieving compact X-ray free-electron lasers based on laser wakefield acceleration.
