In order to surpass the theoretical Shockley-Queisser limit of energy conversion efficiency of singlejunction
solar cells, as well as to lower the cost, advanced concepts and new materials are emerging. By
placing a dense array of quantum dots in the active region of a pin solar cell, which consequently leads
to formation of a superlattice miniband or an intermediate-band, the theoretical conversion efficiency
could reach up to 60% under full sunlight concentration. Recent advances and future research
opportunities for quantum dot multiband solar cells are reviewed.
