A rapid expansion nozzle is an essential part of a gasdynamic laser (GDL). Theamount of vibrational energy frozen in the expansion and the cavity gas temperatureare both controlled by the size and shape of the nozzle. These effects on the performance of 16μm-CO2-GDL are examined numerically using a simplified model. It is shown that the nozzle geometry has a very important effect upon its performance.Making use of a mixture of XCO2: XN2: XHe= 2: 1: 7, a maximum small signal gain coefficientof 3.2m-1 and a maximum available power density of 1.3W/cm2 are obtainedunder the condition of P0= 10atm, T0= 1750K with a Me= 6 sharp cornered throatnozzle.
