The influences of electron beam self fields on the electron orbit and the FEL growth rate are investi-gated. By the numerical analysis of the electron orbit, the suitable region for FEL operation in u-v3 space is shown, where u is the axial invariant of electron motion in the ideal helical wiggler and guide field, and v3 is the axial velocity of the electron. It is also found that the growth rate of FEL does not increase with the increase of the beam current because of the self field effects, when the beam current is greater than the critical value.
