An angioscope-fluorescence analyzing system was inserted into an aorta under sterile conditions. The system was capable of displaying the fine image pattern of intra-vascular structure and a fluorescence spectrum simultaneously on a monitor screen. Photofrin II was administrated intravenously into ear veins of cholesteremial rabbits and they were sacrificed after 24 hours. Photofrin II fluoresces from a progressive atherosclerotic lesion, but emits no fluorescence peaks from a normal lesion by 405 nm excitation. Thus, this system is useful for early detection of atheroscleotic lesion in an aorta.
