Glass is typically regarded as a substrate medium for a wide range of passive optical components, but glass waveguides with active functions have recieved growing attention in recent years. This paper reviews Nd-doped glass waveguides, which are particularly attractive for highly efficient and compact laser sources and optical amplifiers, Progress in crystal waveguide lasers is also described.
