Abstract
A Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL; wavelength=1.315 μm) is expected to be a new useful laser particularly for material processing in the future. A COIL generating half wavelength output beam by intracavity second hermonic generation (SHG) can improve processing quality To shorten wavelength of the output beam of COIL by intracavity second harmonic generation (SHG) improves the processing efficiency. In the present study, LBO was utilized as a nonlinear crystal. Experiments were carried out to obtain a large second harmonic power and to estimate internal conversion and extraction efficiencies. The optimum cavity conditions forintracavity SHG of COIL were determained by using several optical cavities. A total second harmonic power of maximum of 7.4 W was obtained. The internal conversion efficiency was about 0.6 % and the extraction efficiency was 100 % for a multi-mode fundamental beam.
