Recently, group III nitride-based high-brightness blue light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been commercially available, and blue-green laser diodes (LDs) based on II-IV compounds have also been demonstrated. Fundamental findings which lead to the recent developments of the II-VI based blue-green LD and the group III nitride- based blue light emitting diode are reviewed.
