Abstract

Recent progress in photocatalytic decomposition of water to H2 and O2 using semiconductor catalyst has been reviewed. It was found that Na2CO3 addition to Pt-TiO2 suspension in water promoted the stoichiometric decomposition of water extremely. This Na2CO3 addition method has proved to be very useful to accelerate water splitting over various kinds of oxide semiconductor catalysts. Finaly, it was demonstrated for the first time all over the world that water was decomposed efficiently as well as stoichiometrically to H2 and O2 by NiO-TiO2 catalyst and real solar UV light irradiation.
