Novel chirp compensation techniques using a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) only and a combinationof the SLM and the conventional optics for generation of monocycle optical pulses are introduced. Inaddition to the principle of chirp compensation of ultrabroad-band pulses by the SLM in the 4-f pulse-shapingconfiguration, the effects of the SLM structure on chirp compensation are described based on a computeranalysis. Furthermore, the practical capability of the hybrid chirp compensators of the SLM and the prism pairand/or the grating pair is discussed. Finally, the experimental demonstration of the SLM and prism-pair hybridchirp compensation for generation of sub-5 fs, two-optical-cycle pulses is presented.
