Abstract
We tested the commercial location information system with GPS mobile phones (e.g., a 68 g-FOMA terminal) in animal tracking, in comparison to conventional VHF, PHS, and GPS telemetry. Mean errors were <50 m (probably less without our measuring errors). This system is readily applicable to track medium-to-large mammals in service areas if the battery pack, of which battery life was about 8 days, was replaced to a primary battery with a much longer life. The major advantages are real-time tracking via the internet, and cost performance.
