Abstract
A double focusing mass spectrometer with a diverging electric field and a uniform magnetic field is proposed. The diverging electric field has focusing action similar to that of a concave lens and can be produced by a kind of toroidal condenser. This type of mass spectrometer has considerably smaller size as compared with the ordinary mass spectrometer with the same resolving power. Dispersion, resolving power and the second order aberrations are discussed, and typical examples are shown.
