Abstract
In order to study the effect of the crystal orientation on the cutting phenomenon, the orthogonal cutting test was conducted by the use of the specimens of aluminum single crystals in arbitral and designated orientations.
The single crystals were produced through the Bridgman method, and the crystal orientations were determined by the Laue X-ray back reflection method.
The main results obtained are as follows:
(1) The cutting phenomenon change with the cutting direction even on an identical crystal plane.
(2) There is good agreement between the observed slip line and the theoretical one which is determined on the assumption that the slip deformation occurs theoretically by the slip system of crystals.
(3) It is clarified that the mechanism of the formation of the finished surface can reasonably be explained from the slip system of crystals.
