In previous work the author determined the activities of Mn in the Mn–C and Mn–Si melts at 1673 K from the results of measurement of vapor pressures by the transportation method. The present sudy concerns the results of the activities of Mn in Mn–Fe–C, Mn–Si–C and Mn–Fe–Si–C melts determined by the same method for the purpose of applying the results to the study of the smelting reactions of ferro-manganese and silica-manganese. In the measurements, the atomic fractions of Fe, Si and C in Mn–Fe–C and Mn–Si–C melts were limited to lower than 0.25, the atomic fraction of Fe in Mn–Fe–Si–C melts to about 0.05 and 0.10 only, and the atomic fractions of Si and C to lower than 0.25. In the Mn–Si–C and Mn–Fe–Si–C melts, activities of Mn under carbon saturated conditions were also determined separately. The results obtained by these measurements were extremely complicated and they were expressed by an activity curve and many isoactivity curves.
