The crystal structure of cobalt deposits on various metal substrates has been examined by transmission electron microscopy. The cobalt deposits on (001)-Fe substrates exhibited the hcp structure, while those on (001)-Ag substrates exhibited the fcc structure. On (001)-Au substrates, the cobalt exhibited the hcp+fcc structures at substrate temperatures below the transformation temperature.
These observations are explained from the value of c⁄a ratio of the cobalt deposits. The reduction of c⁄a ratio stabilizes the hcp structure. This conclusion is supported by the experiments of cobalt deposition on (111)-metal substrates.
