Bulk (40 g) samples of hypo-eutectic alloys of Fe–C–Si, Ni–C–Si and Co–C–Si have been undercooled by melting under a boron-free soda-lime silicate glass slag. The undercooling of the primary phase was at least 100 K for all three alloys. The maximum undercooling for nucleation of the eutectic in the presence of the primary phase was at least 120 K below the eutectic temperature. The use of a boron-containing silicate glass was found to be unsatisfactory since the carbon content of the alloy decreased at an uncontrollable rate.
