F.c.c. metal single crystals are numerically modeled to simulate evolution of the deformation band. The models include simplified inhomogeneities in resistance to slip deformation. Slip deformation in the models is examined by a finite element method. Analysis results show that slip deformation of some part of the specimen occurs initially and then it expands to form a kink band and/or a band of secondary slip. Based on the internal stress field which accompanies non-uniform slip, a mechanism for generation of the deformation bands is discussed. The proposed mechanism explains the special directionality of the deformation bands and the dependence of the duration of the stage I deformation on crystal orientation and initial inhomogeneity.
