Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) has been applied to the determination of boron in iron disilicide and high purity iron after anion exchange chromatography. These samples were dissolved in hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen peroxide without the vaporization of boron. Boron was separated from the matrices which included sodium salts due to the alkaline fusion of insoluble residue by the adsorption on anion exchange resin from 2 mol dm−3 hydrofluoric acid. Adsorbed boron was eluted with 2 mol dm−3 nitric acid. Boron was determined by ICP-AES after evaporating the eluate. Analytical results by the proposed method showed good agreement with certified values or reference value. Relative standard deviations were 1.9% and 8.5%, respectively, for the determination of boron in the samples of iron disilicide (0.27% boron) and high purity iron (JSS 002-2, 0.00005% boron). Detection limit of boron (3σ) was 0.01 μg cm−3 in solution and was 0.05 μg g−1 in high purity iron when the sample of 2 g in weight and 10 cm3 in final volume was used.
