Abstract

A simple mathematical method for the determination of the optimum heat input condition to control the temperature field in arc welding was discussed in the first part of this paper, where an analytical model of heat conduction was used to evaluate the temperature field during welding on thin plate and pipe specimens and the non-linear programming method was applied to estimate the optimum heat input pattern for a required temperature field. In the second part, the optimum heat input pattern, derived from the above optimizing algorithm, was applied to a circumferential pipe welding with GTA(Gas Tungsten Arc). As a result of the comparison between the experimental and required temperature fields, it was concluded that the optimizing method proposed in this paper is available for determining the optimum heat input pattern of the arc welding process on pipe specimens.
