Abstract

The name Alectoria lanata (L.) NYL. has been used for so-called “takane-kegoke” 〔=Alectoria pubescens (L.) R. H. HOWE〕 by Japanese lichenologists. The name is based on Lichen lanatus L., which is now considered as basionym of Ephebe lanata (L.) VAIN. Consequently the epithet “lanatus” can not be used for the “takane-kegoke” and Alectoria pubescens (L.) R. H. HOWE 〔=Bryopogon pubescens (L.) CHOISY〕, a name commonly used in Europe and North America, should be used.

In 1959, SATO made combinations of Bryopogon lanatus (L.) SATO and B. lanatus var. reticulatus (WULF.) SATO. These two names, however, are illegitimate, because their basionyms were not cited.
