Fine structure of two foliose lichens, Parmelia pertusa and Coccocarpia cronia is observed by means of electron microscope.

  The wall of hyphae in the gonidial layer of P. pertusa consists of two layers; the inner layer is electron opaque and the outer one less opaque. In the gonidial layer of these lichens, an association of hyphae with algae is observed. In P. pertusa, association of the inner layer of hyphal wall with the wall of Trebouxia-gonidia is seen, and in C. cronia hyphae are embedding in the sheath of Scytonema-gonidia. Hyphae in the upper cortex of P. pertusa are surrounded by fibrils (Fig. 4).

  Cultured algae isolated from P. pertusa are different from the gonidia in the thallus as follows ; (1) starch grains are seen around the pyrenoid, (2) electron opaque granules occur in the cytoplasm, (3) algal wall is thicker than that in the thallus. (compare Fig. 1 with Fig. 3)

  4) Cladonia pseudevansii ASAHINA

  According to AHTI (1961), C. pseudevansii ASAHINA occurs in Japanese Archipelago, Sakhalin, Kurile Islands, Aleutian Islands and southern coast of Alaska (cf. Fig. 4).

  The range of C. pseudevansii ASAHINA is completely included in the range of C. alpestris RABH. strain-B (psoromic acid +), while the range of C. evansii des ABB., a vicarious species of C. pseudevansii ASAHINA, is excluded from that of strain-B but overlaps with that of strain-A (psoromic acid －) only slightly at the northern limit of its range.

  The substratum of C. dseudevansii ASAHINA is the open and exposed ground in alpine regions.

  3-a) Addendum to “The genus Oropogon TH. FR.” (Vol. 4, No. 8, p. 129 of this journal)

  Recently I received a fertile specimen of O. asiaticus ASAHINA from Dr. S. KUROKAWA collected by himself at Bettoga near Nemuro, Hokkaido (on Quercus sp ; Sept. 1, 1965). This is the northernmost locality of the genus Oropogon.

  I happened to get a specimen of O. formosanus ASAHINA collected on Mt. Yuwan-dake in Amami-Oshima, the main island of Amami Island which spread between Kyusyu and Okinawa Island. This is the northernmost locality of O. formosanus ASAHINA which was formerly known only in Formosa and India.

  The name Alectoria lanata (L.) NYL. has been used for so-called “takane-kegoke” 〔＝Alectoria pubescens (L.) R. H. HOWE〕 by Japanese lichenologists. The name is based on Lichen lanatus L., which is now considered as basionym of Ephebe lanata (L.) VAIN. Consequently the epithet “lanatus” can not be used for the “takane-kegoke” and Alectoria pubescens (L.) R. H. HOWE 〔＝Bryopogon pubescens (L.) CHOISY〕, a name commonly used in Europe and North America, should be used.

  In 1959, SATO made combinations of Bryopogon lanatus (L.) SATO and B. lanatus var. reticulatus (WULF.) SATO. These two names, however, are illegitimate, because their basionyms were not cited.
