Abstract
This paper examines the feasibility of implementing CO2 capture facilities in municipal solid waste incineration plants to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Analysis showed that facilities processing more than 375 tons of waste per day can be energy self-sufficient when equipped with CO2 capture systems. Calculations indicated that CO2 capture facilities need to be installed in at least 33 facilities to achieve carbon neutrality. Three scenarios for facility consolidation through regional integration were examined. The results demonstrated that carbon neutrality could be achieved through regional integration in metropolitan areas and within prefectures. Furthermore, economic evaluation of CO2 capture facility implementation confirmed that investment recovery is possible given certain CO2 emission credit prices.
